Very few toys these days are able to keep a child interested beyond the lifespan of the advertisements that promote them on TV. Musical toys however, have the potential to influence a kid in a myriad of ways, ways that can last a lifetime. Musical toys are one of the few toys you can buy your children that can have a positive effect on them for the rest of their lives. If a child can get beyond using a musical toy as a sword or a table for dolls to sit at, they can have a genuine educational value, musical toys can expose your children to the essence of art and artistry through music. There are musical toys for kids of all ages, infants to teenagers, and hopefully at some point they will stop being toys, and be recognized as tools of self expression, as instruments.

All babies love banging pots and pans, which is a pretty reasonably priced solution for a musical instrument, however at some point you may want to move them up to something that is not stainless steel and hurts when they bop their heads on it. And quite possibly something that is a little quieter. Most toy stores carry little xylophones, and baby sized piano keyboards, these are a great choice. I’ve seen music books with a piano keyboard attached. The keys were all numbered, and the book has the numbers superimposed on top of the written notes. Learning toys are no fun, kids just do not play with them because they are boring. Not. There are a ton of excellent learning toys available and they are in fact quite entertaining.

Not only will a well crafted learning toy have a system or set of rules by which it is used, these rules or systems must be learned and utilized in order for a child to interact with the toy. Interactions that require fine motor skills, verbal and aural recognition, and problem solving require the child to accumulate skills that can be learned and will prove beneficial as the child ages.

Puzzles are wonderful skill developers as long as they are not too difficult. There are thousands of different types of puzzles, small, large, massive, simple, complex, three dimensional, and a walk down the toy aisle or a simple search on the internet will reveal these and many others.

There are also a ton of educational video games available for children. In fact, if you walk down the toy aisle in K-Mart or Target it’s hard to find video games that are NOT educational in some way. It is a different story when you are in the computer section though. This is where all the shoot-em-ups are. These are usually marketed towards teenagers and very near the popular music section however, with a scrutinizing eye for excellence you can also find the ones that are not violent or have adult themes. Also keep in mind that computers are a way of life now and any kind of computer oriented skill set you help you child garner will go a long way.

Children love toys, always have and always will. Parents will always buying them for their kids as well, that smile, that coo of joy makes it worth every penny. Learning toys do not have to be boring and kids do in fact love them. Kids are like little sponges and with proper reinforcement the learning toy will prove to be their favorite. Reinforcement such as asking them a question you know they have learned the answer to from their learning toy or asking them to perform a task they have learned. They will respond with pride and a sense of accomplishment because they can “do it” AND impress their dad. Learning toys are fun, and they develop skills a child can be proud of.
