Very few toys these days are able to keep a child interested beyond the lifespan of the advertisements that promote them on TV. Musical toys however, have the potential to influence a kid in a myriad of ways, ways that can last a lifetime. Musical toys are one of the few toys you can buy your children that can have a positive effect on them for the rest of their lives. If a child can get beyond using a musical toy as a sword or a table for dolls to sit at, they can have a genuine educational value, musical toys can expose your children to the essence of art and artistry through music. There are musical toys for kids of all ages, infants to teenagers, and hopefully at some point they will stop being toys, and be recognized as tools of self expression, as instruments.
All babies love banging the stuff they find in the kitchen. Silverware, pots and pans make wonderful musical instruments, however things made of metal are probably not the best toys for a child. They hurt when they accidentally hit themselves and they can be quite loud. Most toy stores carry little xylophones, and little pianos or keyboards, these are excellent first toys. I’ve seen music books with a piano keyboard attached. The keys are numbered, and the book has the numbers superimposed on top of the written notes. Simple enough for any child to pick up, as well as providing a great introduction to reading sheet music.
While introducing your child to the different types of musical toys, you will have an opportunity to observe which ones seem to spark an interest. Or if your really lucky, you may notice that they have natural ability. You’ll never know unless you try. While a musical prodigy is rare, there are definite markers such as having a sense of rhythm and being able to hum a tune using the correct notes. In this instance it may be a good idea to seek out the guidance of a qualified musical instructor. While a child may enjoy music lessons at first, there will come a point where it will become tedious, another school and more homework. My personal standpoint is that it’s important not to force them into, or at least noticeably so, it should appear to be their own decision. It has been proven that learning the language of music opens up areas of the brain that will in the long run prove extremely beneficial.
Musical toys can be a great choice for a child of any age. Music is universal. Learning any aspect of music is similar to learning a new language and can have a positive effect that will last a lifetime.
