Teach Your Curious Toddler With Learning Toys

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Kids love toys. They are compelled to reach for everything that comes their way and then, usually, stick in their mouths. This overwhelming curiosity is indeed a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the many learning toys available that can teach them and develop key skills in subtle ways.

There are several different ways to get learning toys for children. The most obvious place to look would be the local toy store where you will definitely come across several learning toys in the toddler and newborn aisles. In fact, you may even be overwhelmed by the selection! But if you can’t find anything suitable at your local toy store, there is always the Internet. Go on-line and do a search and see what happens. After you’ve investigated some of the options, you might want to consider the products below.

A baby swing can be a great learning toy for a baby or toddler but there are lots of different models and features available so you’ll probably need to do some research before purchasing one. Swings are a great way for a toddler to become familiar with their center of gravity and to gain a better sense of balance.

There is a toy phone that speaks in several different languages. You can use it to teach your toddler your native language, or even help them to pick up a bit of a foreign one. Children love to pretend to talk on the telephone so this toy is always a big hit.

The Activity Center, the circular table with a seat in the middle, have logical problems for your toddler to solve by spinning dials, pulling levers, and turning knobs. Keeps them occupied for hours and builds their ability to think abstractly.

The Curiosity Cube is a toy that provides a wide range of activities. It can help your child learn how to focus his or her attention, and broaden their knowledge in several areas including learning the meanings of words and recognizing colors, shapes, and numbers.

There is the veritable classic, present in waiting rooms around the world, the colored blocks or balls that kids can slide along metal rails going up and down slopes like a roller-coaster. This makes a great introduction to the basic laws of gravity.

These are just a few toys commonly referred to as learning toys that can help educate children through play. By paying attention when you are in the toy aisles, or doing an occasional web search for learning toys, you will stay on top of recent arrivals. And it is worth it to do so, because everything that helps your child learn and increase their fine motor skills will definitely pay off later in life.

Musical Toys for Endless Possibilities

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Very few toys these days are able to keep a child interested beyond the lifespan of the advertisements that promote them on TV. Musical toys however, have the potential to influence a kid in a myriad of ways, ways that can last a lifetime. Musical toys are one of the few toys you can buy your children that can have a positive effect on them for the rest of their lives. If a child can get beyond using a musical toy as a sword or a table for dolls to sit at, they can have a genuine educational value, musical toys can expose your children to the essence of art and artistry through music. There are musical toys for kids of all ages, infants to teenagers, and hopefully at some point they will stop being toys, and be recognized as tools of self expression, as instruments.

All babies love banging the stuff they find in the kitchen. Silverware, pots and pans make wonderful musical instruments, however things made of metal are probably not the best toys for a child. They hurt when they accidentally hit themselves and they can be quite loud. Most toy stores carry little xylophones, and little pianos or keyboards, these are excellent first toys. I’ve seen music books with a piano keyboard attached. The keys are numbered, and the book has the numbers superimposed on top of the written notes. Simple enough for any child to pick up, as well as providing a great introduction to reading sheet music.

While introducing your child to the different types of musical toys, you will have an opportunity to observe which ones seem to spark an interest. Or if your really lucky, you may notice that they have natural ability. You’ll never know unless you try. While a musical prodigy is rare, there are definite markers such as having a sense of rhythm and being able to hum a tune using the correct notes. In this instance it may be a good idea to seek out the guidance of a qualified musical instructor. While a child may enjoy music lessons at first, there will come a point where it will become tedious, another school and more homework. My personal standpoint is that it’s important not to force them into, or at least noticeably so, it should appear to be their own decision. It has been proven that learning the language of music opens up areas of the brain that will in the long run prove extremely beneficial.

Musical toys can be a great choice for a child of any age. Music is universal. Learning any aspect of music is similar to learning a new language and can have a positive effect that will last a lifetime.

How To Choose Learning Toys For Your Children

Learning toys are no fun, kids just do not play with them because they are boring. Not. There are a ton of excellent learning toys available and they are in fact quite entertaining.

Not only will a well crafted learning toy have a system or set of rules by which it is used, these rules or systems must be learned and utilized in order for a child to interact with the toy. Interactions that require fine motor skills, verbal and aural recognition, and problem solving require the child to accumulate skills that can be learned and will prove beneficial as the child ages.

Puzzles are wonderful skill developers as long as they are not too difficult. There are thousands of different types of puzzles, small, large, massive, simple, complex, three dimensional, and a walk down the toy aisle or a simple search on the internet will reveal these and many others.

There are also a ton of educational video games available for children. In fact, if you walk down the toy aisle in K-Mart or Target it’s hard to find video games that are NOT educational in some way. It is a different story when you are in the computer section though. This is where all the shoot-em-ups are. These are usually marketed towards teenagers and very near the popular music section however, with a scrutinizing eye for excellence you can also find the ones that are not violent or have adult themes. Also keep in mind that computers are a way of life now and any kind of computer oriented skill set you help you child garner will go a long way.

Children love toys, always have and always will. Parents will always buying them for their kids as well, that smile, that coo of joy makes it worth every penny. Learning toys do not have to be boring and kids do in fact love them. Kids are like little sponges and with proper reinforcement the learning toy will prove to be their favorite. Reinforcement such as asking them a question you know they have learned the answer to from their learning toy or asking them to perform a task they have learned. They will respond with pride and a sense of accomplishment because they can “do it” AND impress their dad. Learning toys are fun, and they develop skills a child can be proud of.
